FAQs

My motor is dead - is there a fuse?

Yes in many door openers there is a fuse - but not all.  If you switch off and pull out the power cord from the socket - then it may be possible to look for a fuse - BUT it is considered a Specialist Repair by most manufacturers.  Is it really worth risking your life to find out?  A basic safety check and fuse replacement for approximately $90 or a full service for about $140 should be considered.  Your door deserves it.

How much does a service cost?

A service generally costs $135.00, which includes a general service of the door and the motor.  If there are parts required, there will also be a cost for supply and installation of parts.

How much does a new motor cost?

It depends on the type of door you have as to what motor you need, the cost is in the vicinity of $600.00.

Can I get the keyring style transmitters with my old motor?

Yes, you can.  I can convert your old ones to new keyring styles with an add on receiver for approximately $250.00.  This also includes a service to your door and your motor. ( A new motor should be considered before spending this amount of money.)

What kind of door do I have?

Please refer to the gallery on this site, it will help you identify your door and your motor, opener.

Can you fix my door or do I need a new one?

I can only answer this question in conversation with you or at an inspection, please ring me to discuss.

Can I get keyring remotes for my door?

It depends on the type of motor/opener you have, please phone me to discuss or check out the gallery page here.

Can I get a new remote for this older style motor?

I am able to supply secondhand transmitters for many motors, please phone Bruce to discuss.  If not, I can supply an add on receiver for about $250 and supply keyring transmitters that will do the job really well.  This also includes a service to both door and motor.

Should I replace my motor or is it worth fixing?

I can only answer that after an inspection and will be able to do either when I come to inspect.

Why is my service light on?

The motor needs a service every 12 months, this indicates that it is now time to have your motor serviced.

Why does my light globe blow?

This can be caused by a circuit board problem, but I would need to make a service call to properly advise you.

Does my door need a service?

Doors generally need to be serviced every 12 - 18 months, depending on use, but like all things mechanical, maintenance is much better than neglect.  If neglected, the problems just become bigger and therefore more costly to rectify.

Can I replace your door?

No. I repair most door types with minor damage.  I no longer replace or install doors as I have no facilities any more to do so.

Can I replace my opener and/or remote?

Yes, I am happy to replace your opener/motor and I can supply most types of remotes or transmitters for most motors; even some of the old ones.

How do I open my door when the power is out?

You must put the door on manual - I can assist you over the phone if you need help. Generally there is a cord or handle to be pulled for this purpose, however, care should be taken if the door is open as it may fall quickly when on manual.

Is it safe to open my door now that it is broken?

WARNING! If your door is UP OR OPEN, you really should not put the door on manual or pull the cord as it may fall quickly.  If it is a broken spring, it is quite dangerouse to do so.  Please phone for expert advice.

How do I get my car out if the door won't go?

You can put the motor on manual, I am happy to advise you over the phone how to do that, but if it is a broken spring, it is better to leave the door shut, call us to repair it and get a lift from someone or take a taxi for the time being.

How long would it take to get someone to repair it?

Generally, I can come the next day or very soon after.

When can you come?

I am generally available with 1 to 2 days, depends on the workload at the time, please phone me to book a time.

What is the purpose of the rubber seal on the bottom of my door?

Many people mistakenly believe this will keep the water out - it usually does not.  Its main purpose is to keep out leaf litter etc. that blows around.  This, too, though can blow in immediately upon opening your door.  It does tend to cushion the closing of the door and performs the above duties in a fair manner.

What are the other buttons for on my transmitter?

You may have a transmitter with a number of buttons, but you only have one door.  The extra buttons are for those people with more than one door and who may also have gates, which can all be operated from the one transmitter. Or you may have light switching capability or pet door.

Can I change just one spring on my garage door if it breaks?

Yes, but a much better option is to replace both.  From my experience, the remaining spring usually breaks within a short time, so therefore the cost is increased as I have to come twice to do the repairs.

What if my motor is okay, but my remotes no longer work and I cannot get new ones?

I can convert your old remotes to new keyring styles with an add on receiver for approximately $250, which also includes a service to both your door and your motor.

Cable off or broken?

I have on board new cable and manufacturing tools to exactly suit your door size and type.  With a full service on your door too, you door will be running quickly and smoothly.  A typical cost for this service is approximately $200 - $300.

Gears stripped or broken?

I can replace most makes and models and refit your opener, including a door service, for around half the price of a new opener - about $260 to $320.

Broken springs on Overhead doors

I carry a range of popular size springs - all quality Australian made - to quickly and efficiently replace your springs.  Normal replacement are usually between $480 - $580 a pair, including a full door service.  Tilt door springs can also be replaced, but I am not geared up as well for these jobs.  Overhead doors are my speciality.

My door auto reverses - how can I fix this?

Is there an obstruction under your door?  Will the door run smoothly on manual or is it binding?  You may well need a door service, which is a good idea if you haven't had it done in the past 18 months.

Rollerdoor not coming down - Unravelling at top.

The door is probably catching in the guides and will need adjustment and probably a good service.

Motor moving excessively on Rollerdoor.

It could be a broken chassis or grub screws may have come loose.  The door would need a service and reset the travel on the motor and any other associated issues.

Remote controls don't always work.

If your remote normally works, but occasionally won't, then you very likely have a radio frequency interference problem.  This can be caused commonly by doorbells, wireless internet connections, CB hifis, etc. and may be hard to track down.  I have had many successful results and if not can change your transmitters to rectify this.

Broken garage door fittings.

Most problems can be solved with new parts.  Sometimes complete replacement of the fittings is required or in extreme a new door may be advised.

Spring off Tiltdoor.

Could be a broken spring or fitting, see above.
